Fixing an iPod Touch or iPhone that Spontaneously Deletes Music
One of the big draws of the iPod Touch and iPhone is the devices’ ability to access the internet and purchase & download songs via iTunes. Imagine my surprise, then, when a Loudon Wainwright III album I’d bought suddenly disappeared from my
iPod Touch one day–and my surprise when the same phenomena reoccurred several days later with a different album. It turns out that the problem isn’t limited to just my device, either. Here’s what to do if your iPod Touch or iPhone seems to spontaneously delete music purchased from the iTunes music store.
1. Check your sync settings. Sometimes, an iPod’s sync settings can cause the spontaneous deletion issue, so plug your iPod Touch into iTunes, then click on the iPod icon. Check all of the settings throughout the menus to make sure that the correct syncing settings are selected, and make sure that your iPod hasn’t been syncing with iTunes and thus deleting your music every time that it’s connected.
2. Reinstall iTunes. If the previous tip didn’t help, it may be a problem with iTunes itself. Reinstall iTunes on any computers that you use your iPod Touch on, and be sure to delete the previous installation before reinstalling. Bad sync issues can be caused by iTunes, which sends a signal to the iPod Touch to sync up with its music library even when the sync settings covered in step one are correctly selected by the user, but a good installation can sometimes fix the issue.
3. Restore your iPod Touch or iPhone. You can do this, once again, by plugging the iPod Touch or iPhone into your computer, then accessing the same icon in iTunes and hitting “Restore,” then “Yes.” Make sure that the newest version of iTunes is installed. Remember that any time you restore an iPod or iPod Touch, you delete all of your settings and all of your music, so exercise extreme caution. Restoring the iPhone and iPod Touch can fix any bad programming that may have led to the spontaneous deletion problem.
